Charles Bridges (1794 - 1869) was a theologian and preacher in the Church of England and a contemporary of J.C. Ryle. Though he is known for his 'Exposition of Psalm 119,' he is best known for his book 'The Christian Ministry.'

In this practical exploration of this important topic, Bridges masterfully discusses any and all aspects of the Christian ministry. For example, how to discern one's calling, how to study well, how to spiritually prepare for the important task of shepherding God's flock, and even how to minister to hard cases who are in need of guidance.

This book definitely belongs at the top of any list for pastors or potential pastors to read.

This eBook edition of The Christian Ministry by Charles Bridges is based on the 1844 sixth edition of the book, published by Seeley, Burnside and Seeley. Changes have been made to the formatting of the text - in particular an active table of contents has been added and the footnotes and editors' notes have been removed in order to promote a more fluid reading experience.

I purchased "The Christian MInistry" because it was highly recommended by John Piper. The sum and substance of my review is this -- get a hard copy for yourself because the uncompromising clarity, Bible-centredness and sense of devotion to God has to be read and perused to be believed. Bridges (as another reviewer also said very correctly) has a sense of gravitas, and deep seriousness about him that pierces the reader -- and rightly so.

This book has to be read at least twice to get a sense of what true, authentic Christian ministry actually is -- in these times we have too much frivolity. There will be much that will be highlighted, underlined and re-read. Do yourself a favour and get this book if you are being called into the ministry -- it's absolutely invaluable and a solid reference book.

The Christian Ministry edition by Charles Bridges Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Great book about His gift of Ministry.
Great book indeed. An essential book for pastors and those who are preparing to be in the ministry. Very recommended.
This is a "must read" for anyone entering into the ministry. It helps to bring out the insufficiency of man and how much we should be grateful for the spiritual gift and calling from God. This gift and calling is for ministry to the world and not for ministers to boast in.
The Christian Ministry by Charles Bridges is one of my favorite books. I am thankful that this classic treatise on pastoral ministry is now available in a edition of such top-notch quality. If you are looking for an excellent edition of this book, then look no further.
I don't want to review the actual contents of Mr. Bridges' masterpiece; if you're considering purchasing this book, then surely sovereignty has prepared you and you know its worth. I rather want to give a heads up on the production. The amazing price should be a giveaway that the book is very no frills generic front cover, completely blank back cover, and yes this is one of those "scan copy" books (where an older version is scanned and then reprinted; complete with smudge marks on some of the page borders). I suspected as much when I saw the amazing price, and for me, the book was still totally worth the $9.99. This is 550 pages of Christian wisdom after all. The biggest disappointment is that the table of contents is cut off. Being that this is a lengthy book, the table of contents probably spanned out over 3 or 4 pages. Only the last page, covering the contents of page 394 to the end of the book, made it in. So you're left with a really big book and no way to reference it. This is a book that should be read cover to cover but also has the potential to just be a reference for specific issues when needed. Without a full table of contents, that will be difficult. Is it the end of the world? No, but it was worth sharing just so you're aware. And I still say it's worth the 10 bucks, but if you really need the table, consider a used copy of an earlier edition.
Any book about Christian ministry written by someone from the Church of England is going to be faulty at least in part because of the author's ecclesiology. On top of that, portions of the book contain a great deal of contemporary material that eludes the modern reader. Finally this kindle edition is lacking in quality; the table of contents only covers half the book and the last 20% of the text is inexplicably in bold font.

This book gets marked down for the above shortcomings, but it is nonetheless a quality book for those in church leadership. I was specifically challenged in the areas of preaching, intercessory prayer, and personal interaction with the members of the church. You will likely skim through a few portions that are not pertinent to you, but the rest you will find richly encouraging as you seek to grow in the leadership of God's people.
I just received the book, but upon a quick scan I can tell it will be excellent reading. I prefer books written by "older" authors; this one was first published in 1830. The doctrine was sound back then unlike many of today's authors that have varied and often questionable ideas.
