It is torturously written and in several places assumes you have read previous narratives without summarizing the main points. The author used historical (600 BC) names for places without putting them in a modern context. I read the Kindle version, so the map at the front of the book was useless (too small to read unless I don't know how to enlarge it). Alll this taken together means I was lost much of the time.On the positive side, it did give me a high level understanding of how the Persian empire was formed and what led to its demise, so it met my goals, but it was hard getting there.
