I did the exercises as they asked and it was painful to confront some things, however I dedicated ten days straight and did the work to read the book and exercises each day, which is only a few minutes, and it works great. When I find myself slacking I just do a refresher and go through the pages I highlighted and I am back on track. My suggestion is to get this, do the work, trust this review. I am amazed this book got me to have more self discipline and that is the key to accomplishing things in life. Everything I have been waiting for in life is getting done. I wish I had been made to read this in high school as I would probably be far better off in life. I am 52 years old and for the first time i am going to take dance lessons, which has been my greatest fear. Getting me to conquer my greatest fear for less than twenty dollars seem like the worlds best bargain to me.

This book breaks down the steps you need to jump start your progression from thinker to do-er into 10 easy pieces. If you are ready to make changes in your life and you are willing to commit to spending 30 minutes a day for 10 days learning how to get the ball rolling, then this book is for you. The things I liked best about this book are

1. It's easy on the eyes. The print is large and there are illustrations, call out boxes, etc. that hold your interest.

2. It doesn't include anecdotes. This book cuts right to the point.

3. Each day's reading is interesting, short, focused, and well-written.

4. The price was high enough that I couldn't just put the book on the shelf and ignore it. I felt obligated to read it.
This is an excellent book for helping you to understand why you don't do the things you wish you did. It helps you to understand why you procrastinate, why fears get in the way of taking action, and why you self-sabotage. It's really not all that complex and we don't have to make it out to be this psychological mountain that will take years of therapy to resolve. Basically we have a conflict between our subconscious and conscious minds. Once we learn the techniques our subconscious mind uses to keep us from our goals, we can employ strategies to overcome them. There's a part of us that prefers comfort and the easy way. And unless we learn to get that part to cooperate with the part of us that has goals and ambition, we'll continue to struggle with self discipline.

Theodore Bryant clearly describes the situation and gives real world, workable techniques that will help you learn how to be more disciplined. I promise it works if you'll honestly apply yourself. I've read the book through 3 times and have highlighted, underlined, and written many notes in the margins. I highly recommend it. It's a real gem in my library.
Agreed with the other reviews that this book really works! I was prepared for the "cheesy clip art" and only found it funny. Several things he mentions are described in other books about anxiety or depression (such as "all-or-nothing" thinking, different types of fears holding you back) but this text is shorter and sometimes that's better simply because it's faster to read. I did the exercises and found out some new things about myself. I find that I handle tasks faster, and will keep working on it to get through more of my backlog and on to new projects.

UPDATE I re-read this book because I found it so useful the first time, about a month ago. So far on home projects, I have cleaned out the front hall closet, the utility room, and donated 2 carloads of things I'm not using. I'm on Day 15 of my 30-day dietary updates. And for work projects, I have finished 4 out of 6 "backlog" items that have been in the back of my mind for much too long. A few things that make this authors strategy different from others he gives recs on when to apply different techniques for dealing with "Hyde". For example, visualize weeks/months/days before the task; relax when commencing; reward after physical accomplishments; and self-talk often.

The visualization activity is still scary, because I'm very good at it but still lean towards generating disaster-outcomes rather than nice ones. So I'm still working on that. This book has been very helpful. I also think solving a problem can benefit from several approaches, i.e., other authors, nutrition, etc. So Steve Pavlina has a nice blog post about visualization, by changing fears to acceptance, then re-visualizing a more realistic and happier outcome. Another aspect is energy -- literally how much energy you have to go about your day. If I'm tired, I sometimes avoid unpleasant or boring things. For that, I have tried an herb rhodiola from Solaray, and found it helped right away. Not a "triple espresso" jolt, but an even boost all day. I have taken it for three months now and haven't experienced any negative effects. And this article from Psychology Today was illuminating about willpower -- rather than a lack of discipline or commitment, it's an over-commitment to a lost cause that makes some people so depressed that they lie in bed and never attempt anything anymore. That author talks about we humans can overcome failures that an animal might not. His analogy is a bear hunting salmon in a stream. After a while of no fish, the bear will give up. But we humans have willpower and sometimes refuse to try another stream. (His example is someone who stays with an abusive spouse because they think the abuser will someday change.) I have read countless books on habit change/cognitive behavioral therapy/etc. This book is the first that has went beyond providing research statistics/and vague self-assessment exercises. Mr. Bryant provides such an incredible introductory that he defuses "HYDE" from talking me out of doing the exercises. This book sticks with me throughout my day, giving me such great insight into monitoring my thoughts/behaviors that defeat self-discipline. My reviews are always right around 4-5 word sentences. I feel I can continue heaping praise on this awesome book. So, suffice to say, this book stands out as one of the best. I read a section, go back, highlight, do the exercises, re-evaluate/read again. Phenomenal book!
